    Unspoilt Costa de la Luz

The beautiful and unspoilt region of Costa de la Luz has some of the most stunning scenery in Spain. It has 3 natural parks including Donana Nature Park which lies at the delta of the Guadalqivir River, covering over 100,000 hectares of land, stretching across parts of the provinces of Huelva, Sevilla and Cadiz. It has a wealth of flora and fauna, with hundreds of bird species coming to breed in spring. Partridges, turtle doves, grey herons and lynxes are frequently spotted here. The park has 3 ecosystems including salt marshes and mud flats, scrub land and dunes. El Estrecho Nature Park is found at the southern most tip of Spain, covering nearly 19,000 hectares of land. With only 14 kilometres between the park and North Africa, thousands of birds stop off here on the migration path to West Africa in early autumn. The park has 15 kilometres of wonderful beaches as well as an interesting and well preserved Roman city, Baelo Claudio. The beaches here are well known with surfers who flock to the area, particularly at Los Lances. Los Alcornacales Nature Park covers 170,000hectares, lying between the provinces of Malaga and Cadiz. It includes the largest cork oak forest in the world. The park contains archaeological, ecological, cultural and historical interest, and is a place where cork extraction, cork oak forest protection, big game farming and cattle rearing occur. Los Alcornacales is rich in game, including boar, deer and roebuck, and on the higher peaks the rare mountain goat can be seen. A haven for birds, the Griffon vulture and Imperial eagle are often seen here. This was once an area where bears and wolves lived. It has a mild climate due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, with dense woodland. The Facinas road, once a Roman road, winds through the park, starting at the Roman ruins of Bolonia and working its way up into the hills. White boulders and ferns cover the valley floor and as the road reaches the peaks the sky is filled with raptors.

Bird watchers are rewarded with sightings of white storks in August, black kites in September, Griffon vultures, goshawks and marsh harriers in October. The best spots for seeing these wonderful birds is high in the mountain ridges between Puerto El Bujeo and Sierra del Cabrito, close to Africa. Bird watching expeditions are available in Donana Nature Park. A great way to enjoy the countryside is on horseback, along the Roman road behind Tarifa and up into the hills and past hilltop fortresses. Boat trips are available from Tarifa and Cadiz to enjoy a few hours of whale watching. The waters off the Andalucian coast are rich with marine mammals including Baleen whales which reach up to 120 feet long and weigh up to 190 tons. Toothed whales, common and striped dolphins, porpoise and grampus can also be seen.

Boat trips to Tangiers are also available, where you can visit the exotic souks for souvenirs. There are several places of interest worth visiting in the region. The sprawling city of Huelva has many interesting buildings to visit including a 15th century church and monument of Christopher Columbus. Cadiz is situated on a jutting peninsula, and has some splendid architecture such as its cathedral as well as some interesting mansions such as the Casa del Almirante and Casa de las Cadenas. The beaches in the region are stunning and sandy, with clear turquoise water that is great for snorkelling.

The Costa de la Luz is easily accessible by plane, and is close to a choice of airports. Jerez airport is a 30 minute drive from the coast with flights from Manchester with Monarch and Flythomascook, and from Stansted airport with Ryanair. From Luton you can fly to Gibraltar with Flymonarch, while Malaga airport is served by many airlines flying from Aberdeen, Belfast, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Doncaster, Dublin, Durham, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Luton, Manchester, Nottingham, Stansted, Newcastle and Gatwick. Faro is another airport which is further away from the Costa de la Luz, but with airport car hire, travel is easy. There is a great deal of choice of accommodation available in the region, ranging from studio apartments, luxury villas with private pools, and a variety of hotels, ranging from bed and breakfasts to 5 star standards.
